I'm 47, I Love Hawker Food, and I Got Lean Anyway
For 25 years I chased abs. I used to work in public gym as a certified fitness instructor and gone through commando training, and none of that handed them to me. I just trained harder. More crunches, more sweat, thinking that was the answer. It wasn't. Then in 2024, at 46, I decided enough is enough.
So I got intentional. Same workouts, but this time I tracked my diet and actually learned my food. And I love hawker food. Laksa, char kway teow, economy rice, all of it. For years I carried more fat than I wanted while telling myself the same nonsense everyone tells themselves. Too busy lah. Too old already. Cannot give up the food.
Then one day I stopped making excuses and started counting. I figured out how to eat the exact food I already eat, every day, and still lose fat. Went from 22% body fat to 15%. No chicken and broccoli. No starving. Still eating at the hawker centre.

After I competed, I sat with a question. There had to be a reason I chose to stand on that stage at my age. And there had to be something worth passing on, a way to help other people hit their weight goals and live healthier without hating the whole process. That feeling was familiar. It was the same pull I had years ago at Holdinghands Studio, when I wanted to help people tell their story through photography. Same feeling. Just pointed somewhere new.
And here's what got me. Every app I tried was built for somebody else. Some 25 year old who eats clean and has two hours a day for the gym. Nobody built anything for a 40-something who eats local food and has maybe twenty minutes to think about it. So fine. I built it myself.
That's LeanerTogether.
**What does it actually do?**
You point your camera at your plate and it tells you what you're eating and what it's costing you. Hawker food, packaged stuff, even a menu at a restaurant. No typing "one bowl fishball noodle" and praying it's in the database. It just reads your food.
Then it tracks five simple things a day. Water, protein, steps, sleep, one lesson. That's it. The people who win at this don't do twenty things perfectly. They do five things most days. Simple on purpose.
And it talks to you like a real person, not a robot. It knows what time it is, so it talks about the meals you still have coming, not the ones you already ate and can't undo. Most importantly, it's honest. We never fake a result. We never show you some before-and-after that didn't really happen.
**Why does it work?**
Because you finally stop guessing. Most people fail just because they have no clue how much they're eating. Once you can see it, you can fix it. You keep your food. You build small habits that stick because they're small enough to do even on a bad day. And you get real coaching without paying coach prices.

Here's the part I actually care about. The name is the whole point. Getting in shape shouldn't be lonely or miserable or expensive, and it shouldn't only work for young people with perfect lives.
This is for the uncle who thinks it's too late. The auntie who's tried everything already. The busy parent eating lunch standing up. I was you. I'm just a 47 year old guy who loves hawker food and got lean by being consistent and honest about it. If I can do it, so can you. That's not a sales line. That's just true.
**Why this matters as much to me as Holdinghands Studio.**
People ask why a social enterprise like Holdinghands Studio is behind a fitness app. To me it's the same thing. The whole reason I started Holdinghands is in the name. You hold someone's hand when they're struggling and you walk with them until they can stand on their own. That's always been the point.
LeanerTogether is that same idea, just pointed at health. It's not a side project and it's not a money grab. It's the same promise in a different shape. Reach the person everyone else ignored. Don't sell them shame. Don't make them feel small. Just hold their hand and walk with them until they get there.
Holdinghands Studio helps people who feel left behind. LeanerTogether helps people who feel left behind by every fitness plan out there. Same heart. Same reason I get up in the morning. One brand is not more important than the other, because they're built on the exact same thing. Nobody should have to do the hard stuff alone.
No magic. No shame. No giving up the food you love. Just real people getting leaner together, one normal day at a time.
